Hello! The edges of my ileostomy are raw. I've used the stoma powder and also tried calamine lotion, but once the pouch is on, it stings. I've also poured some water in the pouch. Any suggestions?

Peace

Try putting a pouch on another spot to see if you get a reaction. Maybe you are allergic. Good luck.

Raw skin like that sucks. Usually, you get no adhesion.

You should see a stoma nurse about this. But what Xine said is true; there are o-rings and wafers that can be toxic to your skin and cause exactly what you're going through.

Determining if it's bacterial or fungal would be next.

There are a few discussions on treatment in the forum section.

I saw my stoma nurse. My barrier ring was toxic. Nystatin worked for me. Using a Cera ring was a game changer. This all happened last October.

It's a prescription.

First thing to rule out is the hole you're cutting in the flange too big.

Do you use a barrier ring, and/or a barrier spray like Cavilon?

This sounds crazy; however, it worked for me. I applied Vicks VapoRub on the raw area (just around the stoma on the raw area). Not for everyone, but it worked for me. jb

I have to use stoma paste in a thick ring around the hole I cut in the flange. I also use a template that a wound nurse made for me as I was making the opening too big. I'm having surgery tomorrow to have it reversed, and I hope it is successful. I really hope you can feel better very soon.

My stoma used to sting from cutting the wafer hole too small. Now I cut the wafer hole larger and use a moldable barrier ring. No more sting.

Try Marathon. And make sure you aren't cutting the hole too small.

Hi, it sounds like your output is stinging any areas with exposed skin. Along with these other excellent suggestions, maybe try to keep your bag off for a bit so your skin can breathe.

Also this: Changing the wafer too often... it is very easy to damage your skin and not know it. Taking the wafer off too fast or too often can damage your skin.

I have a colostomy. Change the wafer (carefully, slowly) every 10 days. My skin looks perfect every time my wafer is off.

The trick is: Discover the change interval that works best for you. I started out changing the wafer every 4 days.

Someone here suggested Domeboro soak once. It's a powder you can buy over the counter. It's sold for weepy rashes like poison ivy. Soak a paper towel and place it on the skin. It will help dry out the skin and heal it.

I used this on skin that was breaking down around my drain. I was getting small bowel fluid leaking around the drain, and the skin was a mess. This really helped me.

Thanks. Did you get it reversed?
