I am one and a half years with an ileostomy. I have black output since this morning. I feel fine, no cramping. The only change in my diet was yesterday when I had a couple of cranberry and vodka drinks. I do have a call into my gastroenterologist, but haven't heard back. Anybody have any experience with black output?

If black output continues, see your doctor right away.

Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it can cause dehydration. But it does not change the output color to black.

Cranberry juice might affect the color and odor of the output... but it does not turn it black.

Foods with dark pigments like berries or grapes can temporarily change the color of the output. The question is: How much do you need to consume for a color change? And the color change is usually not black.

Black stoma output, especially if foul-smelling, can indicate internal bleeding and warrants prompt medical attention. Or it could be a benign condition like melanosis coli. Either way, seek medical attention if black output persists.

This group has been my go-to during my loneliest hours whenever I've had a "bag blowout" at 3am and there was no one else in the world to talk to.

Because it's a global community, there's always someone here to lend an ear, provide advice, and just hold my hand if that's all I need.

Sure, there's also a lot of camaraderie, fun topics, and laughs, but the main reason I come here is for the total acceptance I get from the members. No one else on the planet could possibly "get" what I'm going through, not even my loving husband or supportive family.

The "Meet an Ostomate" forum is definitely a one-of-a-kind family, which I am very proud to belong to.

You've hit the nail on the head. I would agree with Cranberry; if you're concerned, feeling ill, or having blackouts, see a doctor, or if the output is still black tomorrow.

If it doesn't change to normal color output in the next day or so, I'd see a doctor. Are you sure it's really black, not just dark brown? My output gets very dark brown if I eat dark chocolate.

Things I can think of that turn your poo black: iron tablets, Guinness, and Pepto Bismol. And a list of health concerns. You best get in touch with your doctor.

Is your black output liquid or tar-like consistency? I have had black or very dark brown liquid output before. Occasionally, I get it now, but I am on iron tablets right now, so I expect it. However, I don't always have black output. What you eat or drink can affect your output color. For instance, when I eat beets, I get a deep blood red/purple colored output. So, it is possible that cranberry juice could cause a change in the color of your output. If you have no other symptoms, I would say you are going to be okay. But if you start having pain or see a discoloration of your stoma or begin vomiting, it's time to head to the ER or call your doctor right away. Otherwise, I'd wait it out and see what tomorrow brings.

Hey, how are things with you today? Is your output back to normal yet? Update, please.
