Update they sent my urine to the hospital and its come back with luecocytes, nitrate, epithelial cells, red blood cells and white blood cells

This is my 5th kidney infection this year. The pain from them is absolutely horrific. I've been put on a really strong antibiotic for 10 days that I haven't been on before in the hope it helps. In 10 days, I have a blood test and an ultrasound to check for a stone! Does anyone else suffer from kidney issues with an ileostomy?

Are you getting the right kind of hydration? Electrolyte sachets are good for replacing these, especially if you have high, watery output. Water alone is not isotonic; being in this dehydrated state can lead to UTIs and kidney infections, and they can progress quickly if not caught early. Are any of your meds impacting kidney function? I can get dry mouth and a headache if I'm getting dehydrated, so I've got a stash of rehydration sachets and take a couple of them if I'm feeling like that.

Thank you for your quick reply. I'll discuss irrigation with my doctor. I'm sure it would be down the road. My output is still very liquid. It's all so unpredictable at 6 weeks post-op. I have such a fear of constipation as I struggled with this forever. I used a fiber source to thicken the stool but it hasn't helped very much. I guess I will continue to be positive but it is a bit of a pain. This website is great and everyone is so informative. Cheryl

I am constantly thirsty, and I'm always drinking isotonic drinks, but nothing actually helps my thirst.

Have you had a complete blood test? Excessive thirst is a sign of diabetes.

They are testing for this with the blood test I'm having and also my bone profile and liver function.

No, luckily my kidneys are the only thing I don't have any problems with yet. Anyway, if you haven't done so already, speak to your stoma nurse/consultant about how many isotonic drinks you should have a day, as drinking too many can be bad for you and make the problems worse.

I've had kidney stones twice before the ileostomy and once since. I've never had an infection that I'm aware of.

Very helpful

G-Day Ashton,

Since September, I have been in the hospital 3 times to try and remove a large stone in my left kidney. I had stents fitted each time. On the last procedure, they removed the stents, and a few days later, I passed a couple of good-sized stones. Over the years, I have had a few and passed some really big ones. See photo.

One of the stones on the right has a wire embedded in it; it must have come from a stent that had broken off.

Hi Iggie, that pic brought an audible groan from me, as I've passed several stones over the years, and the pain from some was worse than the surgery pain that I've had for ostomy.

Iggie, those aren't kidney stones; those are aerial views of prehistoric islands. You must have bled at some point through urine.

No one is mentioning this: the first sign of a stone is bloody urine. The stone cuts you inside, and you do bleed.

Quite a shock too.

I only had 1 or 2 stones since an ileostomy. One passed on its own. The other needed surgery—a procedure. You will be in severe pain if you have a stone... this stuff makes grown men cry. Depending on the size of the stone from an X-ray, the next step follows: pass it or surgery.

Yes, three stones; two had to be removed, and one passed on its own. I am a type 1 diabetic, and I agree you definitely need to get checked for diabetes.

If your kidney infection is like a bladder infection or urinary tract infection, I found the absolute fastest and easiest way to cure this and make it go away for good. Buy some colloidal silver at a health food store or on Amazon. Soak a cotton pad in colloidal silver and press it against your pee hole every time you feel pain and every time you go pee. Relief happens almost immediately, and within 1-3 days, it will be gone. I was having recurrent UTIs, and this stopped them altogether.

I had acute kidney failure a couple of years ago when I had norovirus. I was losing more fluids than I could replace. I ended up in the hospital on fluids, and it led to sepsis.

I was drinking isotonic drinks and Dioralyte sachets at the time to try to rehydrate. After I got out of the hospital, I realized these were making me worse because they have artificial sweeteners in them, which increase output.

Since then, if I'm losing too much fluid and feel dehydrated, I make either the Oxford solution or St. Mark's solution. Neither contains any sweeteners, and apart from going into the hospital on a drip, I found they are the best way to hydrate.
