Question for the community. Can anyone recommend a company for travel insurance with an ostomy to Scotland/Europe? I am finding a lot of companies that provide insurance, but not for pre-existing conditions like an ostomy.

Hi R10Highlander

I'm in England. I've used CedarTree Travel Insurance a couple of times when traveling to Europe with an ileostomy.

Good luck and safe trip!

Yeah a year ago I wouldn't have known what to ask to find out I had a parastomal hernia. The only reason I knew about them is from this site. Thank goodness for this site. Otherwise I would still be clueless. If I hadn't though from stuff on here to ask my surgeon about having a hernia, then I would have never had the CT and I would have never known that she should have known about it a year ago.

I am a United States of America resident. Looks like that company requires you to be a permanent UK resident. Any other suggestions?

BlueCross is represented by GeoBlue in the US. I haven't traveled for ages, so I'm not sure about the ostomy issue.

Most travel insurance, if you purchase a policy within a short time period after you book your travel, will cover pre-existing conditions. My wife and I have traveled extensively throughout the world. I always make sure pre-existing conditions are covered. I have many medical conditions and a colostomy (for the last 2 years). With the colostomy, I've been on 2 international cruises and had no problem purchasing travel insurance that included pre-existing conditions.

That said, I've never had to file a claim for a medical problem while traveling. But better safe than sorry.

I don't purchase cheap insurance. There's plenty of that available. My experience with well-known, popular cheap insurance is this: They will fight you over the smallest claim. I know... been there, done that.

I now pay much more for hopefully better service. I researched the company, and user reviews were mostly positive. I choose and pay extra for an option that will evacuate me wherever I'm at in the world, emergency or non-emergency, to a state in the USA of my choosing.

I will private message you with details of the travel insurance I now use.

We have always gotten travel insurance that covered pre-existing conditions. I've never heard of an insurance company that won't cover it. It just costs more, but I've always figured it was worth the extra.

Mr. B, I would love to have the info regarding the travel insurance. My husband and I are planning our first international flight to Germany in August and welcome any tips and tricks you might offer. Thanks, Lisa

Most of the big-name companies are absolutely not writing policies for pre-existing conditions. I am guessing many folks don't know when they buy it that they aren't covered. You only find out when you read the fine print. I have found some now due to suggestions on here, but the cost is almost double for insurance that will cover pre-existing conditions.

Interesting. We haven't traveled since just before COVID, and I wonder if that had something to do with the changes. I would think that it would be enough to turn some people off traveling at all.
