I'm having a reversal for ileostomy in a couple of weeks. I had flights booked, and the hospital said flying is not recommended for 4-6 weeks after.

Considering driving a rental car for 5 hours instead.

Has anyone attempted either after this procedure? I wish the hospital was more informative about the ins and outs of this before I bring it up.

What type of reversal are you having… as in what are you reversing back to?

Are you traveling for surgery?

I believe it will be because of the cabin pressure on a new wound, which may cause complications of stitches/staples coming loose. I also would not recommend driving yourself after surgery, as the wound will be very sore and it may be difficult for you to sit for five hours in a driving position. My suggestion is to ask a friend to drive you so you can be comfortable or hire a private ambulance to take you home. It will be worth it.

After my reversal, I had a three-hour journey home, and my husband drove. It was still one of the most uncomfortable journeys of my life, and I wish I had booked an ambulance.

Wishing you all the very best for the take-down.

Mrs_Eff "I felt your pain." Post-op proctectomy. My buddy picked me up in a 3/4-ton pickup for a 4-hour drive home. We got caught in a derecho in 8/2020. We sat on Interstate 380 for 3 hours, painful!
