Flying or Driving After Ileostomy Reversal?

This topic is about the considerations and advice for traveling after having a loop ileostomy reversal surgery. The person in question is planning to undergo this procedure soon and is trying to figure out the best way to travel back home afterward, given the hospital's advice against flying for 4-6 weeks post-surgery. They are contemplating a 5-hour car drive instead and are seeking experiences from others who have traveled by plane or car shortly after this type of surgery.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Flying soon after surgery is generally not recommended. The changes in cabin pressure can put stress on a fresh abdominal wound and may risk loosening stitches or staples.

2. Driving yourself is also not advisable. Sitting upright for a long period, like a five-hour drive, can be very painful and might interfere with the healing process.

3. Consider these alternatives:
- Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you so you can recline and rest during the journey.
- Hiring a private medical transport or ambulance is another option. Although it can be expensive, it offers a smoother, safer ride and allows for easier positioning.

4. Even with someone else driving, long car trips soon after abdominal surgery can be extremely uncomfortable. Some people have shared that their 3- to 4-hour post-op journeys were among the most uncomfortable or painful experiences, especially if there were any delays.
