I've had my current ostomy for 2.5 years. I'm plagued with leaks. Recently, one lasted 3 days, and the next one lasted 3 hours. Basically, the ostomy lasts 24 hours. I have a lot of surgical scarring on which my ostomy is situated. I'm 6'1" but very skinny at about 125 lbs and unable to gain weight. Glen or paste doesn't help. I'm looking for suggestions as to how I might deal with this. I recently had a severe prolapsed stoma condition, but it mysteriously corrected itself, and the leakage became much more frequent.

Scar tissue will interfere with sealing.

You should investigate if your scar tissue can be reduced by a doctor or dermatologist.

Skin must be clean and dry for the best seal. Use only soap with no lotions, dyes, or fragrance. These chemicals interfere with sealing.

Are you using a moldable barrier ring?

This can help with sealing.

I get 2 days with no ring and 10+ days with a ring. Flange extenders may give you extra days.

Hi, I've had my ileostomy for 2 years. Also, I suffered with leaks. My stoma nurse advised me to lay flat when putting on a new one. I also use a stoma ring before putting the bag on, then I use a flange extender, so 3 lots, and it did the trick, not leaking very often.

All the best, Rob.

G-Day Baggs,

You could also get the surgeon to relocate the stoma to an area without scars.
