Hello Carolw,
I will try to answer both your questions in this one post.
The question about whether or not you can irrigate - with or without a hernia should really be put to you ostomy nurse.     There are many different reasons for not being able to irrigate.      All I would say is that I have a hernia just behind the stoma and I irrigate.    It is so much more convenient (except when I'm actually doing it) than constantly emptying bags and worrying that they weighed too much and might fall off.
The second question was about output.    I cannot see any reason why irrigation should affect output,  except that everything comes out all at once instead of over a period of time. Of course there is the fact that irrigation involves putting an amount of water into the stoma - so that has to come out as well as whatever else is in there.   I remember someone on this site once posted a reply to a previous similar question and I quite liked his answer.  It was   " If you eat like a horse then you sh*t like a horse!"    I hope you find that you are able to irrigate as it will make the rest of your living that much easier.
Best wishes   Bill

Hello fellow ostomates, my life has changed since I met this wonderful French Canadian lady on this site on 3-17-2013. We were married on 12-20-2014 in Phoenix, AZ.

Hi Carol,
I have a hernia above the navel in the centre of my stomach and I can irrigate. Check with your stoma nurse. Were you done at The Countess of Chester Hospital?, you look familiar, maybe I've seen you there. Take care. Bob.

Yes, you can still irrigate if you have a hernia, i have 3 big ones but i'm having problems now,  it just takes longer, i put the water in two times. Takes 90mins to 2hrs, normally it took 45mins.
