Irrigation with a Hernia: Is It Possible?

The topic at hand is about managing colostomy irrigation when you have a hernia. A person is curious if having a hernia will interfere with their usual colostomy irrigation routine. Here are some insights and advice shared by others with similar experiences:

- Having a hernia doesn't necessarily mean you can't continue with irrigation. Many people successfully irrigate even with one or more hernias.
- It's important to consult with your stoma or ostomy nurse to ensure that irrigation is safe for you, as there might be specific medical reasons why some individuals are advised against it.
- Some practical experiences from others include:
1. A person with a hernia near their stoma finds irrigation more convenient than using pouches.
2. Another individual with a hernia above the navel irrigates without any issues.
3. Someone with three large hernias can still irrigate, although the process now takes longer (about 90 minutes to 2 hours instead of 45 minutes) and requires splitting the water instillation into two parts.
- It's important to note that irrigation doesn't change the amount of stool produced; it just evacuates it all at once along with the water used for irrigation.
- A general tip to keep in mind is that your diet will still affect the volume of output. As the saying goes, "eat like a horse, empty like a horse.
