Any suggestions that will help me to make the ostomy bag easier to empty? Very often it is so thick and heavy and sometimes I have to add a little water to help it to empty easier. I do thing I eat the right things.

Have you tried using Lubricating Gel? you can get if from your ostomy supplier or you can put a few drops of Olive Oil.

High carbo diet makes the stool thicker and heavier, especially pasta. Try a glass or 2 of red wine. It works like intestinal drano.

Have you tried using a closed end pouch

You just have to remove the pouch and toss it away when it is full.I use them because I pass more solid stool than liquid. Happy New year

Sounds to me like you're eating too many carbs...also, make sure you stay WELL hydrated.

I had that problem for a while...I put some baking soda in my pouch, kills the odor and makes it easier to empty. But my doctor gave me the best solution...keep my mouth shut more often!

I didn't like that answer but I tried it and lost ten pounds..it was also nice not to empty my pouch so often!

Awhile ago I got some sample packets of a pouch lubricant that Hollister was going to market.  I don't know if they carried on with it or not.  I have an ileostomy, so it was of no use to me.  I would ecco what was said above, perhaps a few drops of olive oil or mineral oil, and drink lots of water.

Water, water, water is what has helped me so much.  Also not so many carbs, eat less and added more protein.  Good luck.

I take a good stool softener every day and along with drinking enough fluids, which I have a hard time doing. it helps me keep the stool soft enough to get out of the bag okay. I wish that there was some sort of duel roller device that you could slide the top of the bag between the have it roll it all down and out. After I empty the bag I pop open the end and using a wet wipe I like to clean out the end of the bag that folds up so that there is no seeping out of leftover bits that are messy and produce an odor.

I have always used water to clean out my pouch, whether the stool is hard, soft or runny.  I don't remember if I was taught this or started on my own.  I keep two cleaned out soda or water bottles filled with clean water on top of my toilet tank at all times, and rinse my pouch, then use tissue and press the little bit of water out.  Has always worked great for me.  Sometimes I use Hollisters Adapt Lubricating Deodorant.  The pouches I get have an odor filter in them.  The best things is to do what you're comfortable with, and what works for you.  Happy New Years to all!
