Hi,
I had a colostomy three years ago. The colon was punctured by the surgeon due to an absess being treated and an attempt was made to seal the back passage which was not successful. I now have overgranulation where my back passage is which is very bad. Can this treated by plastic surgery or has anyone any sudgestions. I am to see a corectal Doctor at Freemans Hospital Newcastle as a second opinion regarding plastic surgery. Is this possible to put things right.
I have a lot of mucus discharge which smells also I have been told there are more polyps I only had one previously and now have depression and cannot sit down bcause of the pain.

Please someone help. I live in County Durham.

Hi Hatlady and all,

I've had my ostomy for over 50 years, since I was a kid, and didn't think I really needed to be part of the ostomy site. But once active, I came to realize, that although I may not need help at the time, I was able to reach out and  help others in need. Back in the day, before stoma therapists, I use to visit new patients in the hospital or homes ... While professionals are great, it is also good to be able to speak with people with personal experience. I was a free member for awhile, but after writing often, I was given free months. I then started paying, and decided to just take lifetime membership. After all, I was going to have my ostomy for the rest of my life. I'm one of those people who can disappear for a few months at a time, but I'm always glad that the site is here, I can return and reconnect with old friends, and make new ones. This is an excellent site ... Best regards to all ... and Best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year.

Hello Mark,
Sorry to read about your plight.
Granulation tissue grows where the unhealed flesh is open and wet, so I think your skin must be finding it hard to properly heal in the dampness of your discharge.

I wonder if you have been referred to a Tissue Viability Nurse yet? There is usually one working in your local hospital if it is a decent size. If not, look to your nearest City, and just pick up your phone and ask for her at the hospital telephone switchboard! She will answer your questions and might well be able to come up with ideas and the solution that you need.
By the way, a plastic surgeon is interested in surgery , which is best avoided if possible ( risk of infection etc etc)

Have you tried foam dressings to the area yet?  They also help shrink granulation tissue.
Don't despair.
