I've had my colostomy surgery since Dec 05, i do irrigation and i'm having problems with it now because i have three large hernias. I can't clear it out like before, hernias are blocking. I was just in the hospital for leakage too from rectum and drs said its from inflammation and there isn't anything that can be done. I haven't had any leakage for years and all of a sudden at least once a week it does this now. Does anyone have this kinda problem? Doctors won't do hernia surgery either, i'm at a high risk.

Hi Primadonna - Sorry this is so late in coming to you - I don't get on this site often anymore.
I also irrigate and have a fairly large hernia around my stoma. Sometimes during irrigation I massage the stoma a bit to get things flowing. I've asked my surgeon about it and he says that it's fine to do that.
As far as the rectal leakage is concerned - if it is mucus-like, yes that is normal even if it is tinged with blood from time to time. If it gets really smelly or seems more watery, like urine, as in my case it could be urine. I developed a fistula between the bladder and rectal areas. But believe me, you will know the difference by the odor!

Hello and welcome to meet an ostomate. The site charges a fee only for Full Membership, you can still interact with members here via the forums and the public chat room with free membership. The site charges a fee since it has expenses ... as do all websites, people have to spend their time to run and maintain the site, buy bandwith, servers, and other things. I am a life member here, it cost me 56$....about the price of 1 cup of coffee a week for a year. I think that is a very small charge for such a big reward.
