I read about this.  It is an INTERNAL bag that takes the place of an iliostomy. It collects the waste and you use a catheter to drain it several times a day.
Do you know anything about this?

Here's their web page:

www.bcirostomy.com   www.bcirostomy.com/faq.php

It is similar to a Kock pouch.  I have not had any patients that have done this specific procedure, and only 3 with a Kock pouch;not done so much in my area.  2 did fine, 1 had the pouch resected but due to her disease ended up being Crohns rather than UC (she had complications due to the Crohns).   It is not done for Chrons.

Hi Deb,

As you can see, the outpouring of love and support from this website will help you to find the strength to lift yourself up and out of your current emotional situation. I am lucky to have my husband by my side through all of this, so I will not even pretend to know how you feel and what you're going through alone. I do know that I have great friends on this site and in my life that have been by my side, and hopefully you have many by your side as well. You do have a lot of new friends here. Please feel free to talk through anything that is on your mind. We all go through a confidence deficit when we go through an ostomy surgery. Our body has been marred and your mind feels that way sometimes too. It is tough to move on, but you will. You will be stronger once you realize that you are still the beautiful woman you were prior to your surgery. Hopefully, you can reach out to a local support group and find some additional friends in your same situation. It always helps to have a sounding board wherever you find it!

This is Zack, writing in December so maybe you are all set by now.  BY ALL MEANS CHECK OUT THE BCIR.  I was going to get the BCIR, didn't; had standard complete ileostomy.  Have always wondered how the irrigation procedure to evacuate waste would have worked out if one ate too much roughage or something too big for the irrigation tube they showed at the BCIR seminar.  Otherwise I regretted not doing it.  I had attended a detailed seminar by BCIR and was even 100% approved to have it done.  Missed while I went on a vacation, our insurance changed and they didn't want to pay for it so ended up with A "regular" ileostomy.  If you haven't yet by all means check it out.  It cost $40,000.00 in 1999 and it was then only done in their St Louis, Missouri hospital.

This is Zack again; thought of more about the BCIR.  My surgeon knew as a colleague the Dr Kock who invented the first internal pouch and advised me that the BCIR was a great improvement on the KOCK's valve mechanism so it was virtually leakproof, BUT my Dr didn't like the idea of sacrificing so much of the small intestine to make the BCIR valve.  Other than that he said it was a great advance over the KOCK pouch.

Ya think it might be worth talking to my surgeon about this? I,m having para stomal hernias fixed sometime in the new year and not to carry a bag would so nice.

I can't have it done.  I don't have enough small bowel.
