I have a crust half way around my stoma and I don't know what this is. I have had infections in the past and use a prescription cream for it but never a crust. Has anyone experienced this?

This site is a godsend. As a newbie (colostomy on Nov 8, '21), I look at it every day for a number of reasons. Reading what people are going through makes me grateful that my elective surgery because of a severe case of IBS-C is nothing compared to what they have been through and are still living with.

I don't have to go to the hospital for anything related to my ostomy. I feel sorry for those who do and am in awe of those who can use humor to describe their ordeal. I identify with those who express their fears. I especially identify with those who are depressed because I am clinically depressed and have general anxiety disorder. How ironic that having a colostomy eliminated some of the depression and anxiety that the IBS created. I've been widowed twice and I'm on match.com.
I immediately included my operation in my profile and am pleased to say it doesn't seem to make a difference.

And there is much humor on this site and it's one of the reasons I enjoy it so much.

I could name numerous things I've learned from reading people's comments/questions/answers.

After months following on a daily basis, my only negative comment is I don't like listing the most popular members.
It's not that I don't like these people; I do. It's that I think it elicits some "Facebook"-like banter or comments that are gratuitous.

I don't do any social media and think that its merits are overshadowed by too much negativity.

Meetanostomate is in no way negative. I just think the gallery of "popularity" detracts from what is an excellent website that deals with a serious issue that causes a myriad of emotions.

I also have a "recessed" stoma and the leakage is out of control.  My skin is also burned from the acid and I have tried everything including the stoma powder.  I did call Convatec and Coloplast, they are sending me samples of the convex wafer.  I am hoping that this helps because I am in so much pain from the skin irritation that I can hardly stand it.

I hope someone answers with some tips or help in reference to a stoma that is totally recessed.

I have battled a recessed stoma since 2004.  I use convex flanges.  Some companies have a variety of convex flanges.  I loved the convatec moldable convex flange for years.  A year ago I had to change to coloplast and now use the flex-pro convex flange because convatec changed the adhesive on my pouch and it would no longer adhere to the flange.  I use the 2 piece system wher ethe pouch sticks to the flange with adhesive.

For the burning skin....  When I first had my ileostomy in 1989 I had a lot of leakage and burning skin.  The ET that helped the most recommended treating the skin with liquid Maalox or Mylanta, to neutralize the acid.  Once this is dry, I applied a skin prep pad to provide a better adhesion for the new wafer.
Once the skin is healed, you can skip the Maalox.
With a recessed stoma, you should investigate a "Convex" wafer and a belt to hold it tightly in place.  This should solve your challenge.
Also, there is a United Ostomy Association of America Conference in Jacksonville, FL next month (Aug. 2013).  They have traditionally had a "stoma clinic" where one can get one-on-one assistance from a professional ET (Now called WOCN) nurse, and free samples of any products you can use.  Lots of other very useful education and a lot of fun as well Check it out at www.Ostomy.org.   I know Jacksonville is a long way to go, yet the experience is well worth it.  Hope to see you there.  Bruce
