Hello.  I wanted to get some feedback from any people who have an ileostomy and  have had any issues with proctitis.

If you have had this, please let me know any treatment(s) you tried and the outcome.

Many thanks

Hi NorthLA, I have had proctitis for over 8 years following ileostomy operation where the stump was left. I have never been able to cure it fully but have found that PREDNISALONE RECTAL FOAM and flushing with PREDSOL RETENTION ENEMA gives relief from the symptoms (bleeding and mucus) but after a while the problems come back. If you do find a permanent cure please let us all know as the medical people can only suggest more surgery to remove the stump as a permanent cure.

Hi Hatlady and all,

I've had my ostomy for over 50 years, since I was a kid, and didn't think I really needed to be part of the ostomy site. But once active, I came to realize, that although I may not need help at the time, I was able to reach out and  help others in need. Back in the day, before stoma therapists, I use to visit new patients in the hospital or homes ... While professionals are great, it is also good to be able to speak with people with personal experience. I was a free member for awhile, but after writing often, I was given free months. I then started paying, and decided to just take lifetime membership. After all, I was going to have my ostomy for the rest of my life. I'm one of those people who can disappear for a few months at a time, but I'm always glad that the site is here, I can return and reconnect with old friends, and make new ones. This is an excellent site ... Best regards to all ... and Best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year.

Hi NorthLA,

I had the rectal stump left as well. Contiued to have problems and the 'fixes' like foam and enemas just didn't work. And still has UC in the rectum. It was almost as bad as before with some of the symptoms.

Almost constant inflammation, mucus, blood ... my body had already dealt with that for over 30 years ...

So decided to have a protectomy ... and haven't looked back.

If you decide to go that route, look for a colo-rectal surgeon and dicuss whether it is possible to have the op done laprascopically. Recovery from this op can be difficult, but I was up and without any pain in a week tops.

Wishing you the best.
