i belive that some drainage is normal IF the rectum wasnt removed during your surgery. if the rectum was removed then you might want to consult your dr or the surgeon who performed your op.  mine was removed so i cant offer any first hand advice, but i have seen others mention the drainage on this forum, you might do a search and find some better results.

I’d like to write a nice review
that might express something quite new.
Then I read previous points of view,
which said the things I wanted to.
I would endorse the things I’ve read
about what other folks have said,
for these are the benefits and things
that joining a site like this can bring.
When I was an initiate, (novice)
it seemed to be appropriate
to express myself in rhyme
as this is how I spend my time.
When contemplating what to write
with contributing to this site,
it seemed to me, my ostomy
could be expressed in poetry.
Thus, when I had something to say,
a rhyme, for me seemed the best way,
for rhymes can often capture stuff
that prose don’t capture quite enough.
I do appreciate the way,
this site lets people have their say
in whatever mode they will
about the things that make them ill.
There are not many forums for
discussing stuff most folks abhor.
So, this site fulfils a small niche,
where angst and problems can unleash.
Where raw emotions can decant,
so, folks feel free to have a rant,
and we can all associate
is something I appreciate.

Hi Becky,  I had drainage for 2 years after my surgery from the abscess opening that needed to close up.  I agree with mild mannered if your rectum was removed then consult with your Doctor.  What type of drainage are you seeing?  It could indicate some sort of infection.  Good luck.  Penguins7

Becky - if you have part of your rectum left and anus intact, like I did for the first 5 years of my colostomy, then yes, drainage is normal, if not comfortable!  Even if it is slightly blood-tinged, that is OK.  It is NOT normal for it to have a foul odor or look really gunky - in that case you may need anal antibiotics or (God forbid) possibly even have a fistula (abnormal opening between rectum and vagina or rectum and bladder) like I developed and eventually had to have the fistula repaired and the anus/rectum removed.  Let's hope you have the FIRST condition!  Annoying, I know but much better than the second condition.  Let your surgeon know.  Pinky

i was orginally just suppose to be re-connected with a j-pouch but post op problems prevented that from happening and so had to go with a permanent Ilie. when the surgeon gave me the permanent stoma - he left the intenal pouch sill hooked up to my rectum - and so with it not having any waste ever passing thru it - the smal bowel section it was create from constanly secreted muucus - Dr said the body naturally does it to cleanse its self we just dont normally see it when were passing bowel movements - finally about 8 yrs ago i got him to remove the rectum and the empty pouch becuase i was beyond tired of flushing it out and draining nightly before bed yet I would still wake to a wet bottom from the muucus. when you see a discoloration in the muucus thats a sign of infection It's very coomin with people with pull-thru j-pouches. It happen to me about once a year and Dr would put me on a course of anti's for a week and it would clear things back up
