Is Persistent Drainage Normal 17 Months Post-Surgery?

This topic is about dealing with persistent rectal drainage after having ostomy surgery. The person who shared their experience has been experiencing this issue for over a year and is seeking advice on whether this is normal and when it might stop.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. It's common to have drainage if the rectum and anus are still in place after a colostomy or ileostomy. This is because the bowel continues to produce mucus as part of its natural cleansing process.

2. If the rectum was completely removed during surgery, ongoing drainage is not typical. In this case, it's important to contact your surgeon or gastroenterologist for an evaluation.

3. Normal mucus can be clear or slightly tinged with blood. However, if you notice a foul odor, discoloration, a thick or "gunky" appearance, or an increase in volume, these could be signs of an infection or a fistula, and you should seek medical advice.

4. Some people experience recurrent or prolonged drainage for years. If managing this becomes too burdensome, some have opted for surgical removal of the remaining rectum or unused pouch.

5. If an infection is present, a doctor can prescribe short courses of oral or topical antibiotics, which usually resolve the issue.

6. Searching through forum archives using terms like "rectal mucus" or "discharge after ostomy" can provide additional experiences and coping strategies from others who have faced similar situations.
