Sudden Increase in Mucus Discharge Post-Colostomy

I've had my colostomy for twelve years after cancer (one episode, no recurrence): in the last few days I've had a sudden increase in mucus discharge from my residual rectum. After no discernable discharge for some months, I've had a discharge four times in three days. Not a large quantity, and apparently normal mucus (e.g. no blood or unusual colour), but should I be concerned at the sudden increase in activity? Obviously diet can't affect it, but it has coincided with some unfamiliar exercise.

Any thoughts, please?

Hey Chris, mine is just about three years old and I have experienced increased mucous after some vigorous exercises.  Once, after hitting about a thousand golf balls, I got a little blood also.  I think I deserved what I got.

I was a fly on the wall for a while, before I joined the group.  I think you will find it's a good bunch of people, who understand what you are dealing with like no one else could.  Glad you found us.

Very helpful

Hi Chris,

I had the residual rectum for 4 years, after my initial ileostomy, but since there was still disease there, I saw the doctor regularly.   Mucus discharge varied...  sometimes more , sometimes less.   I think some is normal, since the rectal lining is "mucosal tissue".  But if you notice that it's too much, too often, best to check with a doctor.  They can still "look", at the sigmoid rectum even after surgery.

Otherwise, hope all is well.  Looking forward to chatting with you again.  We went from winter, to hot weather, and now it's cooler again.   But our community pool opens this weekend, so I hope it warms up a bit.   I haven't gotten my flowers in yet either ( annuals)  I aim for May 14th.....but as usual, am a bit late.
