Hi all you lovely people.....A question for  some of you?

I'm due to go in for another operation to fix my stomach muscle (insisional hernia) caused by prior operations for colitis....I had an illeostomy in 2014.

I'm going to have it done by Guys Hospital in London, the surgeon there says its a good idea to have my rectal stump removed at the same time as it'll save any further complications.

I'm not convinced about it???

Any one here tell me how theirs went and any consequencies afterwards?

Thanks  Pete

"Save Further Complications?"

What the heck is THAT supposed to mean?

I'm in the USA; I don't know if Guys Hospital is good or not (I remember the name from when I lived in England as a kid, but none of us ever had a hospital visit, except one who went to a private Arab hospital for eye surgery).

Again, "To Avoid Further Complications?" The doctor wants to remove your... bit of the colon that leads to your rectum?

I had a colostomy because most of my colon was riddled with cancer. I have ovarian cancer. The reason that I had a colostomy was that I have so many bits of cancer in my colon that it just didn't make sense to keep the colon or try for a reversal on the colostomy or whatever. My husband, my perfect advocate, fought after the fact... could she have a reversal? Knowing what I know now, I don't want a reversal. But my rectum is intact, and I have about 10 inches of colon there just to say I do.

And all of my cancer is in my abdomen, and I'm stage 4 terminal with little specks of cancer everywhere, but my doctor still wouldn't do what I think your doctor proposed to do.

There is not one inch of my body that I would ever give away voluntarily unless it was absolutely necessary.

All those dentists that wanted to pull out my wisdom teeth when my wisdom teeth never hurt me. Just say no! Doctors do the same. It's not too hard to get a second opinion, but if you mention the first opinion, the new doctor will try to cater to that. So the second opinion doctor should feel like he's the first.

Me? I would say, "OK, if I have further complications, you can remove my rectal stump. Let me know when you see further complications. Ta-ra!

I'm not dead yet, but you're not even dying yet. You have doubts about surgical removal... go with your instincts. Tell your doctor that once it poses a real threat to your life, then you'll consider surgery, and that you'll enjoy very close monitoring until that day comes.

This site is a godsend. As a newbie (colostomy on Nov 8, '21), I look at it every day for a number of reasons. Reading what people are going through makes me grateful that my elective surgery because of a severe case of IBS-C is nothing compared to what they have been through and are still living with.

I don't have to go to the hospital for anything related to my ostomy. I feel sorry for those who do and am in awe of those who can use humor to describe their ordeal. I identify with those who express their fears. I especially identify with those who are depressed because I am clinically depressed and have general anxiety disorder. How ironic that having a colostomy eliminated some of the depression and anxiety that the IBS created. I've been widowed twice and I'm on match.com.
I immediately included my operation in my profile and am pleased to say it doesn't seem to make a difference.

And there is much humor on this site and it's one of the reasons I enjoy it so much.

I could name numerous things I've learned from reading people's comments/questions/answers.

After months following on a daily basis, my only negative comment is I don't like listing the most popular members.
It's not that I don't like these people; I do. It's that I think it elicits some "Facebook"-like banter or comments that are gratuitous.

I don't do any social media and think that its merits are overshadowed by too much negativity.

Meetanostomate is in no way negative. I just think the gallery of "popularity" detracts from what is an excellent website that deals with a serious issue that causes a myriad of emotions.
