What changes do you need to make in the way you eat after a colostomy?

Hello mari85,

Is your colostomy new? That is the only time I had to make any changes. Now that it's been more than 10 years I just watch what I eat. Some foods make things less desirable than other foods.

I take part in these forums almost every day. They and the people that contribute to them have made all the difference in my having the courage to live a normal life with an ileostomy. The people here are marvelous and come from all walks of life and from all over the world. Hearing what others have lived through has really helped me put my own experience in perspective. I highly recommend all ostomates and caretakers of ostomates to come join us.

Mari,

I have an colostomy rather than a colostomy.  The only time I had a blockage was when I ate a Lot of peanuts with out chewing them well.  I used a turkey baster for some water irrigation and everything was fine

I do not eat a lot of pineapple with out chewing well, same for any roughage.  Not because of blockage issues but because it tends to make the faceplate of my appliance comes off.

I have never had any exercise related issues.  I did row for many years, which meant I wore a unitary, I learned, no eAting for 12 hours prior to putting on a uni.  Full is ostomy pouches and unis do not mix :)

Hope this helps.

Send me a note if you have any questions.

I started with bland foods and tried different things until I had tried just about everything I regularly eat. Fortunately I found that I tolerate everything without issue. I have a end colostomy with the majority of my colon intact. The less colon you have the more likely you are going to have some issues with some foods.
