Hello. I have a question that I hope somebody can shed some light on. 10 years ago I had an ileostomy. My surgeon left the rectal stump in hopes of doing a reversal. In my last flexible sigmoidoscopy my GI doctorExplained that I have a severe flare up of the rectal stump. My SO anti are trying to conceive. My OBGYN has been giving me tests and everything has been looking great. I have heard and read that removing the rectal stump will create so much scar tissue that it will make a woman virtually infertile. If there is anybody that knows any information about this please let me know. My GI doctor did not know anything about it and told me to ask a surgeon. I am currently taking uceris rectal foam to try to help the flare up. If anybody knows anything about female fertility and the whole rectal stump removal thing please let me know. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

My wife's niece had an ileostomy with a Barbie butt as a teenager and had two boys as an adult. I only say this to tell you it is possible.

I am not looking to concieve, however I do remember asking my surgeon about the possibility of having children in the future (as is was on the radar at the time). I had chosen to have my ileostomy be permanent from the beginning thus removing the rectal stump from the onset of the ileostomy being created.  I remember my surgeon saying "it would be difficult" from the stoma standpoint and abdomen muscles being in a weakend state and the posibilities of hernias.  Fertility never was discussed though persay.....

Again, I am not at all affiliated with the medical field however being a double ostomate I have had my fair share of asking questions and having "women" concerns.  Surely I would suggest maybe your OBGYN and surgeon have a meeting of the minds.......

Hope this helps a little bit.....

I'm a guy, so I can only address the stump issue. I had a rectal stump for many years and had it removed in the late 1990's when I could no longer obtain the belladonna and opium suppositories. Now, although the stump is long gone, a still get "phantom pain" where the stump used to be. However, I am not in a flare up, and the pain is mild to moderate. I fear what it would feel like if I was in the middle of full blown flare. One side effect you will not have is the impotence I have experienced since the removal.
