Hi Everyone,

I had my ileostomy reversed at the end of April. By June I had a HUGE hernia there. I was told this was fairly common. It has been very unpleasant. While I am relieved to have the bag gone (although I had just gotten used to having it of course), this hernia sucks. Very uncomfortable and I look like I swallowed a cantaloupe. I have surgery October 26th. This will be my third open abdominal surgery in 10 months. Last December I had half of my colon removed. Woke up with a bag (wasn't part of the plan), then the ileostomy reversal in late April, now this. Has anyone else had a post reversal hernia with any thoughts to share? My doctor told me this would be the most painful of the the three procedures (why did he have to tell me that?!?!).

Big hugs,m

I've had two hernias at my stoma and I'm not having the 2nd one fixed. Well, unless life goes sideways and I'm forced to do so.

Anyway, my original hernia surgery wasn't any more painful than any other abdomen surgery. I've no idea why your doc would say otherwise.

I guess if it is painful remember pain drugs are your friend and if all else fails wine, beer, whisky, Everclear are all viable options. On as as needed basis of course. :)

Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome, guys. I have to admit this website does seem very friendly and helpful.

I will definitely log into chat as soon as I can and see who is around. Looking forward to meeting some like-minded people! :)

Stomarella,    Unfortunately once the abdominal wall has been cut the likelyhood of a hernia is very common.  The BEST advice is to avoid ANY lifting (a simple gallon of milk weighs 9 lbs.!).  Also try not to cough, sneeze, or laugh too hard.  NOW, I realize the unlikeiy possibility of living a life like that, (especially the not laughing part) so hopefully, your surgeon uses a good mesh, and you use a good hernia belt, and these two together will help to keep a hernia from recurring.  But, as I said and I'm sure your surgeon has mentioned, the recurrence rates of hernias is very high.  Good Luck and take good care of yourself.
