Experiences with Hernia After Ileostomy Reversal

This topic is about dealing with an incisional hernia that developed after an ileostomy reversal. The person had a colectomy in December, followed by the reversal in April, and by June, they noticed a large hernia at the site of the previous stoma. They are scheduled for another surgery to repair this hernia and are concerned about the potential pain, as their surgeon mentioned it might be the most painful procedure yet. They are looking for advice and experiences from others who have been through similar situations.

Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. Pain Management: One person who had a similar hernia repair found it to be no more painful than other abdominal surgeries. They managed their discomfort with prescribed pain medication and, if they chose, an occasional alcoholic drink.

2. Understanding Risks and Prevention:
- Hernias are a common risk after any abdominal wall incision, and they can recur even after being repaired.
- To minimize strain and reduce the risk of recurrence, avoid lifting heavy objects, such as a gallon of milk, and try to limit activities that put pressure on the abdomen, like coughing, sneezing, or heavy laughter.

3. Surgical Support Products:
- It is important that the surgeon uses a high-quality synthetic mesh during the repair for added reinforcement.
- Wearing a well-fitted hernia support belt after surgery can help reduce the chance of the hernia coming back.
