Hiking With An Ostomy - Peer Advice

Posted by MeetAnOstoMate

Based on the discussions from the MeetAnOstoMate Discussion Forum, here is the advice for hiking with an ostomy:

1. Wear what you want and go where you want, making adjustments as needed to manage the ostomy.
2. It takes time to adjust to the ostomy, but eventually, it becomes more manageable.
3. Improvise and figure out solutions for emptying the bag while hiking, such as digging a small hole or finding a discreet place.
4. Use ostomy waistbands or support garments to keep the bag close and prevent it from moving too much during energetic activities.
5. Loose clothing can help prevent the bag from pulling on the skin.
6. Pack extra ostomy supplies and carry a small trash bag for disposing of used bags while camping.
7. Consider using a belt for added security during strenuous activities like kayaking.
8. Seek medical necessity approval from insurance for ostomy belts and other necessary supplies.
9. Embrace the freedom and enjoy outdoor activities without worrying about the ostomy being a hindrance.
10. Carry a small trowel to dig a hole and bury the output when hiking or camping.
11. Use pocket-sized tissue and find a private spot off the trail when hiking.
12. Consider using a large disposable cup with a top for car trips.
13. Use flushable wet wipes for outdoor activities, but keep them warm if it's cold.
14. Irrigate before outdoor activities to extend the time between emptying.
15. Use solid-colored zip bags to dispose of closed pouch ostomy bags discreetly and without odor.
