Sensura Mio Convex Flip - No Spray or Barrier Ring Needed? Users' Experiences?

This discussion is about trying out the Coloplast Sensura Mio Convex Flip, a type of ostomy wafer often referred to as the "Starfish" wafer. The person sharing their experience has been using ConvaTec products along with skin-prep sprays and barrier rings for extra protection. However, the instructions for the Mio Flip suggest that these additional products might not be necessary. The person is curious about whether this is true and is seeking advice from others who have used the product. Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

- Some people with long-term experience (over 30 years) have never used skin-prep sprays or barrier rings with any brand. They simply remove the wafer and clean the skin.
- An ostomy nurse from the Netherlands mentions that adhesive remover wipes or sprays and barrier films are usually only needed for very sensitive skin, such as in children or patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation.
- The Sensura Mio Convex Flip is not truly convex and may not seal well on flat or retracted stomas. In such cases, a traditional convex wafer or a barrier ring might be necessary.
- For those who usually need extra sealing, some have stopped using the spray but continue to use the barrier ring or tape to prevent leaks. Others continue using both the spray and the ring, with one person also adding protective powder.
- Many find the Flip wafer comfortable and flexible but need to reinforce the five "arms" with Brava adhesive strips or other tape to prevent the edges from lifting.
- Wear-time varies among users, ranging from 2 to 10 days. Some experienced leaks after 2 to 3 days without a ring or paste and plan to try again with these additions.
- Feedback on the pouch includes complaints about the large drain diameter, fabric cover collecting waste, felt buttons trapping stool, and the plastic clip being difficult to open and close. Some prefer pouches from Hollister or ConvaTec for their firmer coupling and cleaner drain design.
- If you like your current Hollister wafer, you can cut "finger" shapes into the peripheral tape to mimic the Starfish's flexibility.
- It's expected that other companies like Hollister and ConvaTec might release similar star-shaped wafers if Coloplast's design becomes popular.
- Coloplast provides 5 disposal bags for every 10 pouches.
- Curved Brava C-strips fit the Flip arms better than the Brava "Y" strips that come with samples.
- Users with hernias find the Starfish shape relieves central pressure better than rigid convex wafers.
