Stoma soreness after laying on it - bruised or injured?

This topic is about experiencing pain in the stoma after accidentally sleeping on the stomach. The person noticed discomfort when gas or stool passes, increased mucus, a darker-red stoma color, and pain even when the pouch is off. They are concerned about whether they might have bruised or injured the stoma, especially since they have back problems that make it difficult to avoid lying on their back all night.

Here are some helpful suggestions and insights:

1. Sleep positioning:
- Try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees or use a soft pillow to cushion your abdomen. This can help prevent direct pressure on the stoma.
- Be aware that sleeping on your stomach regularly might cause the wafer opening to shift, leading to rubbing or irritation.

2. Possible causes of pain:
- Direct pressure on the stoma can bruise the external part, which usually heals quickly. However, the internal parts might stay irritated by the output.
- If you feel sharp pain, it could indicate a partial blockage rather than just bruising. Make sure the stoma is passing gas and output normally.

3. When to seek professional help:
- If the pain continues, the stoma changes color, or if there is a decrease in output, it’s important to contact a stoma nurse or physician for an assessment.
- Consider a phone consultation to avoid unnecessary clinic visits, especially if there are concerns about exposure to infections.
