Hello everyone,

I am heading in for spinal surgery on 11/11, two months after my ileostomy, which was two months after spinal surgery…🤔

This spinal surgery is different from my past spinal surgeries; this one is internal to the spinal cord. So, a little nerve-wracking.

But my question to all of you: has anyone else had spinal surgery post-ostomy? Is there anything ostomy-wise that I should keep in mind or be aware of to make my recovery better/easier?

Thank you in advance for all your comments and support. ❤️

Very helpful

I've not had spinal surgery, but I did have a kidney stone removed. That surgery required me to be on my stomach because the incision was in my back... therefore, it's probably similar in some ways to back surgery.

I have 2 ostomies... urostomy and colostomy, so laying on my stomach was problematic. I discussed my needs with the nurse and aide who were going to be in the room with me during pre-op prep. We devised a plan to put a pillow under my chest and one under my hips. This created a space between my ostomies and the table to allow output to flow freely.

I was also worried about my urostomy bag getting too full. They assured me that they would keep an eye on both bags and empty them if needed. I'd think you'd want to make similar arrangements for your ileostomy.

Good luck with your surgery. That would be terrifying all on its own!

Hello everyone!!!

It has been almost a year since joining this site. I just wanted to share. I know a lot of people get concerned about meeting someone on here. I'm not a lifer membership and I had someone initiate to take me out. I've been divorced since 2009. He lives in Chicago. I ignored the first time thinking he was joking. I live in Milwaukee. So a month later he sent me a message through this site saying he wanted to meet me. That was in April this year. I must say it was the best thing that could happen to me. We talk almost every day. We have so much in common. He comes up all the time to spend the day or weekend together. It really does make a difference when someone has an ostomy like you. Such understanding and we always have something to talk about. I want to share because sometimes people think it's hard to meet someone or they say this site doesn't work. I'm a testimony that this site does work. We are talking marriage this time next year. I will keep you posted.

Susan,

Thanks for the boost of confidence regarding the ostomy.

The reason for this surgery is to preserve my ability to urinate and prevent a urostomy. I needed the ileostomy because I lost innervation of my large intestines from my spinal cord issues.

The surgeon is confident he can preserve my current function, but that is about as far as he will go. 🤞🏻

I will be sure to talk with the nurses to make sure they are ready to monitor. The surgery will be about 4 hours, and I will be in the OR for 6.

Thank you for sharing your experience and tips.

I had lower back surgery 5 years ago. I explained to the surgeon that when they roll me on my stomach, to please use two rolled towels to prop my abdomen on. This sort of created a pocket between the two bolsters for the stoma and bag to sit. I also explained that I have already lost some small bowel, and I can't afford to have any damage done and lose more small bowel. I didn't wear the back brace they wanted me to wear. The nurse yelled at me, and I gave it back to her!
