Experiences After Colon Removal Surgery

I have had an ileoscopy for almost 2 years and am doing just fine with it at 80; it will be with me forever. The rest of my colon is about to be removed; why it is not relevant, it has to be removed—no other organs, just the colon. In addition, they will remove or close the fistula. So, with all that said, I am familiar with the surgery, in-hospital time, and recovery. Any thoughts on what else I might experience down the road? Again, right now everything is working just fine, no issues. Thanks, Terry

Good luck with the removal of your colon. If it has to be removed for some reason, it should make you feel better that you got rid of it. Sending you good vibes, my friend; I will be thinking of you.

I have had an ileostomy for about 2 years. The biggest thing that I have noticed is that I get somewhat cold......

Good luck

Hi Terry,

I have had my entire large bowel removed. I had toxic megacolon, so if it had not been removed, I wouldn't be here now.

Good luck with your operation,

All the best,

Gracie

As for down the road:

Are you getting a Barbie/Kenn butt?

They usually sew you up down there. Close the hole.

I would just ask the doctor about the aftermath of the surgery.

1- loss of taste?

2- loss of erection?

3- trouble peeing?

4- popped stitches? Bridging cheeks together.

I have a permanent ileo 8 years. Kenn butt done last year (2023). All 4 occurred after the Ken butt surgery. Just an FYI.

GOOD LUCK.

Hi Terry, I started with a colostomy after a bowel perforation, but it was not successful as my colon did not function properly. I was then given a loop ileostomy, retaining my colon in case they wanted to hook it back up. The ileostomy worked well for me, so my final surgery was to close up the colostomy site (I temporarily had a non-functioning colostomy stoma on my left side and the ileostomy stoma on my right) and remove my colon. There was no reason to keep it, and I'm not sure they want to leave a non-functioning organ inside you. It has been good for me, and the only difference I noticed is that I lost around five pounds and my belly is flatter. Not a bad thing! Good luck with your surgery!

My colon is all gone due to UC. I have a loop ileostomy, and I can have it reversed, but when they tried, it didn't go well. So my stoma was brought back. Not sure if I'll ever attempt the reversal again, but we'll see.
