Shrinking Stoma During Cancer Treatment: Has This Happened to You?

This topic is about a person who has noticed their stoma shrinking during cancer treatment and is wondering if this is a normal variation or something to be concerned about. They had a colostomy created two years ago due to rectal cancer, and recently, after a recurrence and starting chemotherapy, their stoma has reduced in size from 32 mm to 25 mm over the past month. Despite a small weight loss of 10 pounds, the stoma looks healthy and is functioning well. They are curious if others have experienced similar changes.

Here are some helpful insights and advice from others:

1. It's normal for stoma size to fluctuate. Many people notice their stomas change size with temperature—shrinking when it's cold, swelling when it's warm, getting larger just before output, and shrinking afterward.

2. Weight changes can affect stoma size. Even a modest weight loss can lead to a smaller stoma opening.

3. Consider using cut-to-fit or moldable wafers. These are available from major manufacturers like Hollister, Coloplast, and ConvaTec, and they allow you to adjust the fit at each pouch change as the stoma size varies.

4. Keep an eye on the color and output of your stoma. If both remain normal, the change in size is usually not a problem. However, it's a good idea to consult with an ostomy nurse (WOCN) for reassurance and to ensure the stoma is sized correctly.
