Need Help with Irritated Stoma Skin - Desperate for Solutions!

This topic is about dealing with irritated, bleeding, and painful peristomal skin that doesn't seem to heal or seal properly. The person experiencing this issue has tried various products and methods without success and is seeking advice from others who might have faced similar challenges. Here are some suggestions and insights shared by the community:

1. Seek professional evaluation:
- Consult a dermatologist or a certified wound/ostomy nurse practitioner. They specialize in difficult peristomal skin cases and can prescribe advanced treatments if needed.

2. Check for allergies:
- Consider the possibility of latex or specific plastic allergies. Switching to non-latex gloves and hypoallergenic supplies might help.

3. Create a physical channel to divert output:
- Use home-made devices or commercial sleeves to keep effluent away from the skin.

4. Keep products off damaged skin:
- Use strips of Hollister Hollihesive Squares to frame the stoma, allowing the wafer to adhere to the Hollihesive instead of the sore skin.

5. Simplify the system:
- For sensitive skin, eliminate extra seals and pastes. Clean the area, apply a small amount of Anacept Wound Gel, let it absorb, and then use a Coloplast barrier wipe before applying a pre-cut one-piece SenSura Mio.

6. Try different barrier technologies:
- Use a ConvaTec moldable convex flange directly on the skin, sometimes dusted with stoma powder, and press with a warm towel for better adhesion.

7. Use high-performance skin protectants:
- Consider using Marathon liquid barrier or Aquagel to protect and heal the skin.

8. Treat weepy, rash-type breakdown like "diaper rash":
- Spend some time without a bag, apply zinc-oxide diaper cream, and rest before reapplying the appliance.

9. Corticosteroid inhaler trick:
- Use a prescription Flovent asthma inhaler on the irritated skin before applying the wafer.

10. Application tips:
- Warm the wafer with your hands or a hot towel for a stronger bond, and use a hair-dryer on cool to ensure the skin is completely dry before application.

11. Emotional support:
- Remember that seeking help and sharing problems is normal. Persistence and professional guidance are important.
