Urostomy Bag Losing Air When Connected to Bedside Drainage

This topic is about a common experience for people with a urostomy who use a bedside drainage system at night. A neighbor noticed that when they connect their urostomy pouch to the drainage setup, the pouch becomes "vacuum-flat," and they are concerned about whether this is harmful and how to prevent it. They also wonder if using a lubricant might help. Additionally, this person has a parastomal hernia and an ulcer near their stoma.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Check the drainage system: Make sure to identify whether you are using a bedside drainage bag or a rigid bottle system, as the setup can affect how air flows.

2. Understand the vacuum effect: Many people with a urostomy experience their pouches collapsing after connecting to the drainage system. This is a normal occurrence due to negative pressure and does not stop urine from flowing to the bedside container.

3. Pre-prime the pouch: Before connecting the overnight tubing, leave a small amount of urine in the pouch. This helps create a steady siphon and prevents any interruption in the flow.

4. If the pouch is flat but urine is still draining, there is no need to worry. The suction effect itself is not harmful.
