Minted Mouthwash as an Alternative for Ostomy Pouch Odor Control?

This topic is about finding effective and affordable ways to control odor in an ostomy pouch. The original poster is curious if using minted mouthwash inside the pouch is a good idea, as commercial deodorizing products can be quite pricey. Here are some helpful suggestions and insights shared by others:

1. Peppermint options:
- Food-grade peppermint extract can be a great choice for odor control. There are many peppermint-based ideas available online.

2. Household pantry items:
- Baking soda can be sprinkled in the pouch after emptying to help absorb odors.
- Small mints like Tic-Tacs or Altoids can be placed in the pouch for a minty fresh scent.

3. Mouthwash:
- It's generally safe to use mouthwash inside the pouch, but it's best to choose alcohol-free versions to avoid irritating the stoma or affecting the adhesive seal.
- Mouthwash with alcohol might loosen the adhesive.

4. Essential oils and DIY sprays:
- A few drops of essential oils such as peppermint, lemongrass, cinnamon, or lavender mixed with water or alcohol can be sprayed into the pouch or used as a room spray.
- Lavender baby oil can help mask odors and also lubricate the pouch, making it easier for output to slide down.

5. Baby oil and other light oils:
- Non-scented or lavender-scented baby oil is an economical alternative, and only a few drops are needed.

6. Hydrogen peroxide:
- Using about 5 cc of hydrogen peroxide in the pouch can help with odor control. You can add more if the odor is particularly strong.

7. General guideline:
- A common piece of advice is that anything safe to put in your mouth is usually safe to use in the pouch.
