Constant Leaking and Burns - Seeking Solutions for Ileostomy Bag

This topic is about dealing with constant leaking and chemical burns after getting a new ileostomy. The person is experiencing leaks from their stoma, which is causing painful skin irritation and burns. They are looking for advice on how to manage these issues and prevent further leaks. Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Consult with an experienced ostomy nurse. They often have more practical knowledge about appliances and skin care than surgeons.

2. Re-measure your stoma at every change until it stabilizes. Make sure the hole in the wafer matches the current size of your stoma exactly.

3. Use a barrier ring or seal to create a leak-proof perimeter. Products like Eakin Cohesive Seals can be molded to fit any shape and can be layered for extra protection.

4. Consider using a convex wafer or barrier if your stoma sits below skin level or if your belly is uneven. This can help prevent seepage by pressing snugly on the base of the stoma.

5. Fill any gaps on uneven skin with paste or putty. Be aware that it may sting briefly and might dissolve quickly for some people with an ileostomy. Rings usually last longer with liquid output.

6. Protect and heal your skin by using no-sting skin-prep wipes or sprays before placing the wafer. This improves adhesion and creates a protective barrier.

7. Use stoma powder on weepy skin, followed by skin-prep, known as the "crusting technique."

8. Soothe and dry raw skin with calamine lotion, diaper-rash cream (zinc-oxide), or stoma powder. Ensure everything is dry before applying the wafer.

9. Warm the wafer or pouch slightly, for example with a brief hair-dryer blast, to activate the adhesive and help it mold better to your skin.

10. Request free samples of different brands of rings, wafers, wipes, adhesive removers, and extenders. Test them for leak-free wear time and check for any allergies that might be causing itching.

11. Understand that early leaking is common, and peristomal skin usually toughens within weeks. It may take some time and product trials to find a reliable system.

12. If severe burning or signs of infection persist despite proper fitting and skin care, seek immediate medical attention.
