Hernia Protrusion - Spasms, Anxiety, and Seeking Advice

This topic is about managing a sudden abdominal bulge, spasm-like pain, and anxiety when you have a small hernia and a urostomy. The person sharing their experience felt a sudden bulge on the right side of their abdomen after coughing, along with internal spasms and anxiety about movement. They used two hernia belts for support and took medication to calm their nerves. They were advised to visit the ER if severe symptoms occur, but are facing delays in getting a CT scan due to insurance issues. They are also looking for reassurance and practical suggestions to manage their discomfort.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. For immediate support:
- Consider wearing tight shapewear like Spanx or an abdominal binder, and cut a hole for the pouch or stoma if necessary.
- Use an ostomy-specific hernia belt, which can be found on Amazon and delivered quickly.

2. Hospital resources:
- Visit a large hospital and ask for a Wound & Ostomy Care (WOC) nurse. They often have binders or hernia belts and can help fit or modify them for you.

3. DIY or emergency solutions when no belt is available:
- Use a ratchet strap tightened around the abdomen for temporary compression.
- Combine a strap with a rigid disc, like a plastic plate with a hole, to support the hernia.
- An improvised example includes using a cat-food can and an ordinary belt to protect the stoma.

4. General reassurance:
- Many people have experienced similar fears and discomfort. It's important to stay supported and seek professional help promptly.

5. Supply tip:
- Trying belts of different thicknesses is a good idea. Once you find what works best, focus on getting insurance to cover the preferred models.
