Concerns about change in ostomy output pattern and impact of exercise

This topic is about managing changes in colostomy output patterns, the impact of exercise, handling gas, and dealing with anxiety about emptying the pouch away from home. The person sharing their experience has noticed some changes in their routine after starting a gym program and is seeking advice on how to manage these changes. Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Emptying in public and regaining confidence:
- Emptying a pouch outside the home is similar to using the bathroom before having an ostomy. With practice, it becomes a routine.
- Carry a small kit with travel wipes, disposal bags, plastic gloves, and deodorizing drops. This makes it easier to empty the pouch anywhere, and the more you do it, the more confident and free you will feel.

2. Effect of lifestyle, diet, and exercise on output:
- Changes in exercise, diet, hydration, or medication can affect the timing or volume of output. These fluctuations are normal.
- Keep up with your gym routine, but pay attention to how your body responds and adjust your food and fluid intake as needed.

3. Irrigation as an alternative management method (for colostomies only):
- Consider colostomy irrigation, which involves using lukewarm water to stimulate the bowel to empty on your schedule. This can allow you to wear only a stoma cap or plug.
- Look for YouTube videos on "stoma irrigation" to learn about the equipment and technique. Many people find it simplifies their daily routine.

4. Gas and ballooning control:
- To "burp" the pouch, lift the tail, keep the contents tilted back, release the gas, and then wipe the outlet. This can be quicker and simpler than using a vent.
- For Osto-EZ Vent ®, watch YouTube tutorials for proper placement. It should be applied to a flat, empty pouch before use. If the vent clogs, a saline syringe can be used to flush it clean.
- Continue using Gas-X ® or Phazyme ® if they help, and consider adjusting your diet to reduce gassy foods.

5. Dietary suggestions that helped some members:
- Eating small portions of watermelon or muskmelon, or adding them to smoothies, may help with easier evacuation and can sometimes calm both constipation and loose output.

6. Odor management at home:
- When releasing gas at home, some people find it helpful to step into the garden or garage to minimize bathroom odor.
