Bag Overflow - Intimacy Interruptions

This topic is about managing the challenge of an ostomy pouch filling up during intimate moments. For some, the excitement of foreplay can cause the pouch to fill quickly, leading to interruptions and frustration. Here are some strategies and tips to help manage this situation and enjoy intimacy without constant worry:

1. Meal-timing strategy:
- Consider stopping eating well before planned intimate moments to reduce output.
- For evening intimacy, try not to eat after 9 p.m.
- If planning for late-afternoon or evening activities, have your last light meal around 2 p.m.
- If you need to eat, stick to small, light portions.

2. Quick-empty workaround:
- If the pouch starts to fill, take a quick break to empty it in the bathroom, which takes about a minute, then wash your hands and return.
- If leakage happens, both partners can hop into the shower and continue there.

3. Stress management:
- Anxiety about the pouch can increase output, so try to stay relaxed. Using humor together can help keep things in perspective.

4. Output-reducing aids:
- Consider taking an anti-motility medication, like Lomotil, a few hours before intimacy to slow down stoma activity. Be sure to consult your doctor first.
- Some people find that eating a few marshmallows shortly before intimacy can temporarily quiet the stoma, a trick often used before changing the appliance.

5. Mindset reminders:
- Focus on the importance of intimacy and your relationship rather than the pouch itself. Remember, the ostomy saved your life. Keeping a lighthearted attitude can make any interruptions easier to handle.
