Managing Ostomy Bag with Weight Gain?

This topic is about finding ways to change an ostomy bag when weight gain makes it difficult to see the stoma. This can be a challenge, especially if the abdomen protrudes, but there are practical tips that can help make the process easier.

- Use a mirror:
- A full-length or over-the-door mirror can help you see the stoma from different angles.
- Some people find it helpful to sit on a rolling, height-adjustable stool in front of the mirror for better positioning and to reduce back strain.

- Change while lying flat:
- Remove the pouch and clean the area, then lie on your back to flatten the abdomen before applying a new appliance.
- Partners or caregivers can assist while you stay in this position.

- Partner assistance is fine:
- Many people have spouses who routinely help with changing their systems.
- Pre-cut multiple wafers to your stoma size so helpers, or you when alone, can apply them quickly.
- Warming the wafer, such as by placing it between a microwavable bean bag, can improve adhesion.

- Maintain independence as backup:
- Even if a caregiver usually helps, practice changing the bag on your own for times when help is unavailable.

- Sitting aids:
- A rolling stool can also make emptying the pouch easier than straddling the toilet, especially for those with back pain or surgical incisions.
