Hello,

The tape on my ostomy flange doesn’t stick to my skin well in spots. Any way to get it to adhere better to my skin without having to use the flange extenders? My skin gets rashy from them . Should I put on stoma powder and crust the skin to get the tape to stick better?

Stoma paste works pretty good for this. Have you tried it? Adapt makes a good one.

The odd time I get flanges that don’t stick well - I think it’s a manufacturing issue - I use tape instead of returning them. I find if there’s a tiny bit of powder exposed after applying Cavilon skin protector wipes the flange doesn’t stick. Nothing sticks to powder.

Hi Deb,

As you can see, the outpouring of love and support from this website will help you to find the strength to lift yourself up and out of your current emotional situation. I am lucky to have my husband by my side through all of this, so I will not even pretend to know how you feel and what you're going through alone. I do know that I have great friends on this site and in my life that have been by my side, and hopefully you have many by your side as well. You do have a lot of new friends here. Please feel free to talk through anything that is on your mind. We all go through a confidence deficit when we go through an ostomy surgery. Our body has been marred and your mind feels that way sometimes too. It is tough to move on, but you will. You will be stronger once you realize that you are still the beautiful woman you were prior to your surgery. Hopefully, you can reach out to a local support group and find some additional friends in your same situation. It always helps to have a sounding board wherever you find it!

Thank you. I’ll try the stoma paste instead of the extenders

Cavilon Liquid Barrier Film works very well for me as a barrier between anything with adhesive and my skin. I use the liquid on a cotton ball to get the best coverage. I once got a rash from my wafer. I lifted it, put barrier film on my skin, let it dry (only takes a few seconds) and then pressed the wafer back down. It stayed adhered very well. The rash healed under it.

I use a skin bonding cement. It works great.

I first use Hollister adhesive remover wipes then I use stoma powder, blow off the excess then put on 3m cavilon barrier which really works well.

G-Day AL,

I recon you need a barrier spray or try other makes. The companies will send you free samples to try free of charge just give them all a call. You could be allergic to the adhesive.

I use a prosthetic glue.
The stoma nurse gave me some samples of a skin barrier wipe that was also a glue and they worked well. Unfortunately, my memory is almost non-existent, so I cannot recall what make they were.
Best wishes
