Depends and Stealth Belt - Dealing with Leaks

This topic is about finding ways to prevent leaks from an ileostomy when wearing regular pants. The person sharing this story is concerned about their 79-year-old husband, who has an ileostomy and usually wears Depends for extra confidence when going out. However, wearing regular pants with Depends creates pressure on the stoma, leading to leaks. They are considering trying a StealthBelt but are unsure if it will help. Here are some insights and advice from others who have faced similar challenges:

1. StealthBelt Feedback:
- Many users with both colostomies and ileostomies report not experiencing leaks while using a StealthBelt.
- One user mentioned that the belt could be wider as it might slip on "love handles," but it still prevents leaks effectively.

2. Alternative Belts and Supports:
- Consider using simple elastic belts that attach to the wafer or bag tabs for extra support. These are available from various brands and are designed to circle the stoma without covering the pouch.
- The Hollister Ostomy Belt is a slim option for two-piece systems and can help prevent the flange from lifting under clothing.
- Jockey-style boxer briefs, which are stretchy men's underwear, can comfortably hold the pouch flat under jeans and other fitted pants.

3. Clothing Adjustments:
- Opt for loose-fitting pants or sweats to avoid waistbands that press directly on the stoma.

4. Flange Security:
- Make sure the wafer is sealed completely around the stoma and change it before the wear time ends. Gaps in the flange and pancaking are common causes of leaks.

5. Rethink Depends:
- Some people question the necessity of Depends, as the extra waistband might be causing the output to be forced under the flange.
- For those who need backup only for occasional rectal drainage, thin menstrual pads placed inside regular underwear can be a less bulky alternative to adult diapers.

6. Rectal-Stump Drainage (General Tip):
- If mucus becomes an issue, glycerin suppositories or evacuation strategies can help reduce the need for pads or diapers. This tip is shared for anyone in a similar situation.

These suggestions aim to help manage and prevent leaks, providing more comfort and confidence when wearing regular pants.
