Tips for a Two-Hour Direct Flight in the US

This topic is about managing an ostomy during a short, two-hour direct flight from Portland, OR, to Las Vegas. The traveler is hoping to avoid needing to drain their pouch while in the air. Here are some helpful tips and insights for making the journey as smooth as possible:

1. Empty or change your pouch right before you board the plane. For most people, a two-hour flight is well within the normal time frame for wear or drain intervals.

2. If you do need to drain your pouch during the flight, don't worry. Using the aircraft lavatory for this purpose is routine and usually goes smoothly.

3. Pack a small "clean-up kit" in your carry-on bag. This should include a spare pouch, wipes, deodorant, and any other supplies you might need, all kept in a secure bag.

4. Try to stay relaxed. Feeling anxious can increase intestinal output, similar to how it might have before surgery.

5. For those with a urostomy, be aware that cabin pressure can cause the bag to fill more quickly. You might want to slightly reduce your fluid intake before boarding, but remember to sip water to avoid dry mouth. Also, consider emptying your pouch about 30 minutes before landing so you can deplane and collect your luggage without feeling rushed.
