Persistent Ostomy Issues and Skin Irritation Concerns

This topic is about dealing with a persistent rash and skin irritation around the stoma, which can be quite frustrating, especially after years of having no issues. The person sharing their experience has had an ostomy since 2004 and recently started experiencing these problems. They noticed a rash under their armpits and around the stoma, with the skin oozing where the wafer tape adheres. The wafer also doesn't stick well once it gets wet. They used to shower daily and change their appliance once a week, but now they need to do it every other day because the tape loosens when wet. Despite consulting various healthcare professionals and trying different treatments, the issue persists. They suspect a change in the tape formulation might be the cause.

Here are some helpful tips and insights shared:

1. Use alcohol-free baby wipes with aloe on the irritated area. This helped clear the rash within a few days and can be repeated whenever itching returns.

2. Apply liquid Mylanta (an antacid) directly to the irritated skin. This has been reported to help calm the rash.

3. If using Relia wipes, consider stopping and instead dust the area with regular foot powder until the rash resolves.

4. A cloth pouch cover can help eliminate skin irritation where the pouch rubs. Additionally, trying oral vitamin E supplements might help with irritation under the base plate.
