Struggling with Stoma Seal Removal - Need Advice

This topic is about finding gentle and effective ways to remove stoma seals, especially when dealing with residue issues after surgery. The person sharing their experience had trouble with Secuplast seals sticking to their skin, which was painful due to stitches near the stoma. They sought advice on alternative products and techniques to make the process easier and less painful. Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Use alcohol-free adhesive remover wipes:
- Safe n Simple peri-stoma wipes are available in the USA, are flushable, and contain no alcohol.
- Welland Adhesive Remover Wipes are available in the UK, are alcohol-free, and do not sting.

2. Try alternative seals that are easier to remove:
- Request free samples from your delivery company. Hollister seals are recommended as they tend to leave less residue than Secuplast.
- When requesting samples, avoid mentioning recent surgery to prevent being redirected to your stoma nurse.

3. Consider different adhesive remover sprays:
- Appeal Spray is effective but might be strong on already-sore skin.
- Ostomart tea-tree–oil wipe/spray is a gentler option.

4. For mechanical removal:
- Use a hair dryer to blow cool air onto the residue. Once cooled, roll the adhesive into small balls with your fingers and lift it off the skin without scratching.

5. General cautions:
- Avoid picking at residue with your fingernails to prevent injuring stitches and surrounding skin.
- Always choose alcohol-free products to minimize stinging on sensitive or healing skin.
