Severe Burning Around My Stoma: Seeking Relief Tips

This topic is about someone experiencing severe burning around their stoma, which has been quite painful for the past couple of days. They usually find relief using Nystop, an antifungal powder, but this time it hasn't been effective. They're seeking urgent advice on how to soothe the burning sensation and protect their skin. Here are some suggestions that might help:

1. Try the stoma powder and crusting method. Lightly dust the irritated skin with stoma powder, then apply a No-Sting skin prep. Repeat these steps to create a protective "crust" before attaching your appliance.

2. Give your skin some air exposure. Remove the wafer and let the skin breathe for a couple of hours. To manage any output, keep towels handy and consider fasting beforehand to minimize any mess.

3. Use barrier rings or seals instead of paste. Hollister Adapt Barrier Rings can form a protective sleeve around the stoma, offering better protection than paste. Mold the ring around your stoma, then attach the wafer. Convatec Eakin Cohesive Seals are another option, and you can contact Convatec for samples. Users have reported up to five days of wear time with improved skin condition.

4. Combine rings or seals with stoma powder. Lightly dust powder around the edge of the stoma before applying the ring or seal. This can help with healing and absorption.

5. Consider using a protective barrier medication. Some people find relief by medicating the skin barrier itself before attaching the pouch, which can ease pain and promote healing.
