Traveling to the USA Alone with an Ostomy: Tips Needed

Traveling solo from Ireland to the USA with an ostomy can be an exciting adventure, especially if you're heading to places like New Mexico. If you're an ostomate, like our traveler who is two years post-surgery for ulcerative colitis, there are a few things to consider to make your journey smooth and enjoyable. Here are some helpful tips and advice:

1. Packing & Quantity
- Pack a full set of pouches, wafers, and any other supplies you use daily, plus a couple of extras for days when you might swim or be more active.
- It's a good idea to bring about twice the number of changes you think you'll need. You can fit all your spare supplies in your carry-on luggage.

2. Backup & Local Supply Sources
- Before you leave, search online for medical supply stores and ostomy distributors near your destinations. Most towns in the U.S. have stores that carry ostomy products, and major manufacturers like Hollister are well-stocked in the USA.

3. Airport Security & Documentation
- Full-body scanners usually don't flag an ostomy pouch, so you only need to mention it if you want to.
- If you're searched, a simple verbal explanation is enough.
- Carry an ostomy travel certificate or notification card to help speed up security checks. You can find printable versions online from various sources.

4. In-Flight Management
- Eat and drink as you normally would, and try to empty your pouch every four hours or so.
- Many travelers report no issues with ballooning on long flights.
- Think of the flight as a time to relax—watch movies, rest, and stay hydrated.

5. Climate / Desert Heat
- High temperatures, like those in Western Australia, haven't caused problems for users of standard ileostomy systems, so you can expect similar conditions in New Mexico.

6. General Tips
- Keep all your supplies in their original, clearly labeled packaging to make customs checks easier.
- Consider having a small travel kit with scissors, disposal bags, and skin-prep wipes in your personal item for quick access during layovers.
- Stay hydrated, especially in dry climates, to maintain normal output consistency.

With these tips in mind, your solo trip to the USA should be a wonderful experience. Safe travels!
