Sharing My Ostomy Story with My Girlfriend

This topic is about the experience of discussing an ostomy with a new partner. The person sharing their story recently had this conversation with someone they were dating, and it went well. They offer some personal insights and advice based on their experience:

1. In both dating and life, try to avoid people who are shallow.
2. How comfortable your partner is with your ostomy will often reflect how comfortable you are with it yourself.
3. Instead of rehearsing a one-sided speech, be ready to adapt and go with the flow during the conversation.

The person also mentions that since their surgery, they have been able to do things they once thought were impossible, and they hope others with ostomies can find similar success.

Here are some additional pieces of advice and insights:

- Confidence and self-acceptance are important. Approach the conversation without expecting rejection and with the belief that you deserve a healthy, equal relationship.
- Many partners are accepting, and long-term relationships and marriages can thrive despite an ostomy. Don’t assume your pouch will be a deal-breaker.
- Being honest early on helps build respect. While some people may struggle with the information, straightforward communication can help you find truly compatible partners.
- Your comfort with your own situation greatly influences how comfortable others will feel about it.
