Day 11 Post-Op: Adjusting to Life with a Stoma

This topic is about someone who is 11 days post-surgery and is dealing with some common challenges that can come with having an ostomy. These include managing liquid output, dealing with odors, and taking care of irritated skin around the stoma. Here are some helpful tips and advice shared by others who have been through similar experiences:

- Skin care:
1. Clean the area around the stoma with warm water and gently pat it dry. Avoid using wipes that might irritate the skin.
2. If needed, use a mild, fragrance-free soap like Ivory, but make sure it doesn’t have any lotions or oils.

- Controlling odor inside the pouch:
1. Try adding a few drops of peppermint essential oil to the pouch before putting it on.
2. Consider using a specialized ostomy deodorant, which can be effective even after eating foods that typically cause odors.
3. You can also place mints or a pinch of baking soda in the bag as a simple and affordable way to manage odors.

- Managing liquid output and gas:
1. Eating a few marshmallows can help thicken very loose output.
2. Gradually reintroduce foods, starting with soft options, and eat small, frequent meals.
3. Many people find they can return to most foods in moderation, but keeping evening meals light can help reduce overnight output.

- Staying hydrated and supporting recovery:
1. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially with continuous liquid output.
2. Move carefully, rest often, and remember that noisy output and emotional ups and downs are normal in the early weeks.
3. Reading earlier forum posts can offer practical tips and reassurance, and don’t hesitate to ask questions if you need more help.

- Coping with nausea during emptying:
1. Breathe through your mouth or plug your nostrils with tissues to help suppress the gag reflex, as vomiting can strain your abdominal muscles.

These insights are shared to help make the recovery process a bit smoother and to remind you that you're not alone in this journey.
