Feeling like crap

This topic is about handling an unexpected colostomy pouch leak while out in public. It can be a challenging and embarrassing situation, but there are ways to manage it and reduce the chances of it happening again. Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Food is not usually the direct cause of a pouch leak. More common reasons include:
- Wearing the wafer for too long without changing it.
- Allowing the pouch to become more than one-third full.
- Pressure from a seatbelt or other sources disturbing the seal.
- Random issues with product adhesion; sometimes flanges just fail.

2. Keep track of how long you wear your pouch and change it earlier to minimize the risk of leaks.

3. Always carry an emergency kit with you. This should include:
- A spare flange or wafer, a pouch, and a few pre-moistened wipes.
- Women can keep this kit in a purse, while men can carry it in a pocket, as it is thinner than a wallet.

4. Have a larger backup kit in your car. This should contain extra bags, flanges, bottled soapy water, wipes, and spare underwear and clothing.

5. If a leak occurs while shopping:
- Leave your cart and go directly to the restroom or your vehicle.
- You can ask a cashier to hold your groceries while you clean up.

6. Wearing a long coat can help hide any wet patches until you can address the issue.

7. For those with hernias, using a support belt or applying direct pressure around the stoma can help keep seals secure, although no method is completely foolproof.

8. Understand that accidents will happen to every ostomate at some point. Focus on learning from each experience rather than blaming yourself.

9. After dealing with a mishap, treat yourself to something nice and remember the life-saving benefits your ostomy provides.
