Travel with a stoma

Traveling with an ostomy might seem daunting at first, but with a little preparation, it can be a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here are some helpful tips to make your journey as stress-free as possible:

1. Preparation is key. By planning ahead, you can ease most of the worries associated with flying or traveling long distances with a stoma.

2. Pack generously. Bring at least three times the amount of ostomy supplies you typically use. Remember, medical items are not counted against your standard luggage limits, so you can bring as much as you need.

3. Keep essentials close. Always carry your essential equipment in your carry-on bag. This way, you’ll have everything you need right at your fingertips.

4. Be ready for security checks. While customs and airport security generally allow medical supplies, having a pocket-sized medical or ostomy card can help you quickly explain your needs.

5. Request professional assistance if needed. If security personnel need to inspect you, you can ask for a medical professional to be present to ensure your stoma is handled properly.

6. Choose the right tools. Blunt-ended or bulb-tipped scissors are often allowed where sharp scissors are not. These can be handy for cutting wafers and are less likely to be confiscated.

7. Embrace the journey. Even if things don’t go perfectly, being well-prepared allows you to relax and enjoy your trip.

Remember, good preparation, especially carrying extra supplies, is echoed by many as the best way to make any trip less stressful when you have a stoma.
