Symptoms of Partial Blockage After Eating Fried Food?

This topic is about understanding the difference between a partial blockage and a food-related upset for someone with a high-output jejunostomy. The person in question recently experienced discomfort and an increase in output after eating a deep-fried meal, and they are trying to figure out if this is due to a blockage or just a reaction to the food.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Signs of a typical blockage or obstruction include:
- Crampy abdominal pain with little or no output.
- Nausea or vomiting.
- Small amounts of thin or watery output after a period of minimal output.
- Watery output alone, especially if the overall volume is still high, is unlikely to indicate a blockage.

2. Fried or high-fat meals can increase output and cause indigestion in jejunostomy patients. This happens because bile may not effectively break down the fat. Enzyme or bile-salt supplements, similar to lactase tablets for those with dairy intolerance, might help. Check with a pharmacist or stoma nurse about their availability.

3. It's important to stay well hydrated, as outputs above 2 liters per day can quickly lead to dehydration. If antidiarrheal medication is no longer effective in controlling the volume, seek medical advice promptly.

4. In the UK, you can use NHS 111 for urgent assessment or contact your stoma nurse the next day if symptoms remain mild.

5. Chew your food thoroughly and drink plenty of fluids. Many people with ileostomies or jejunostomies can tolerate most foods when these precautions are followed, but individual responses can vary.

6. The terms "blockage" and "obstruction" are interchangeable and refer to a kink in the bowel or something stuck inside it.
