Post-Op Weight Restrictions?

This topic is about understanding the weight-lifting restrictions and other considerations after having ileostomy or colostomy surgery. If you've recently undergone such a procedure, you might be wondering how long you need to be cautious with lifting and what other adjustments you might need to make in your daily life. Here are some helpful insights and advice:

- Healing Timeline
- It can take 12 to 18 months for internal abdominal tissues to fully regain their strength, with about 95% healing expected by 6 months. At two months post-op, it's still too early to lift without restrictions.

- Weight Limits and Hernia Prevention
- Stick to the 10–20 lb (4.5–9 kg) lifting limit until your surgeon gives you the all-clear. Some people are advised to keep to a 10–15 lb limit for 6 to 9 months.
- It's wise to be cautious for life. Ignoring a 10-lb lifetime limit led one person to multiple hernias and several additional surgeries.
- Be mindful of heavy coughing, straining, or any sudden force on your abdomen, as these can cause a parastomal hernia. Manage colds aggressively and brace your abdomen when coughing.
- Some individuals return to heavy strength training after full healing, but only with medical clearance and proper core conditioning.

- Support Devices
- Consider wearing an abdominal or stoma support belt/girdle to reduce the risk of hernias when lifting or during daily activities.
- There are commercial stoma guards or covers available to prevent waistbands from rubbing against your stoma. Many people also create their own DIY versions.

- Core Exercise Guidelines
- Avoid crunches and sit-ups early on; therapists often advise against crunches after abdominal surgery.
- Once cleared, safer core exercises include planks and controlled abdominal bracing (pulling the belly button in).

- Practical Lifting Tips
- A full gallon of milk weighs about 8 lb (3.6 kg), which can help you gauge the weight of everyday items.
- When carrying groceries, take fewer items at a time or make extra trips to avoid straining.

- Clothing Work-Arounds for High Stoma Placement
- Consider wearing low-rise shorts or petite-cut jeans, high-rise leggings under long tops, tunic-length dresses, or mini and t-shirt dresses with casual shoes.
- High-waist athletic leggings or yoga pants paired with oversized shirts can help hide and protect your appliance.

These tips can help you navigate life post-surgery with more ease and confidence.
